Cassie and Matt: Part 2

We've been experimenting with adding a random element to the creation of our crystals.  To create a clean silhouette we introduced a constraint to the envelope.  We tried different substrates including wire, suspended string and pipe cleaners.

We considered the fused deposition modeling that Matias suggested but decided against it at this time.  Fused deposition modeling is technology that we don't have access to and moves away from the crystalizing process that we've been focusing on.

For the wire we cut a handful of ~12" pieces and pushed them into the tube.  The wire splayed and curved back up into the tube creating a mess of connections.

For the pipe cleaners we cut a large amount small pieces, placed them into the tube and then shook the tube.  we hoped that this would randomize the interior connections.

For this experiment we suspended pieces of string into the solution so that when they came in contact with the bottom they created random connections interactions.

For this experiment we used one strand of thicker gauge wire.  We continuously pushed it into the tube so that it would curl back into itself.

These are the diagrams we created to explain the creation process that the fulgurite goes through in comparison to the artificial process that we are using.
